Bükkösd
The most beautiful privately-owned Baroque castle of Hungary
The National Heritage listed, u-shape castle has the most elegant Baroque facade in Baranya county. Its designer was Fischer von Erlach, Maria Theresa’s famous architect. Some sources reveal that the building was commissioned by Zsigmond Petrovszky in 1736; according to other sources Dániel Horváth had it built for his daughter, Krisztina Horváth and her husband, József Petrovszky. The elements of copf style can easily be recognised on the castle. The balcony above the main entrance rests on hermas. The protruding middle part of the castle is a three-axe battlement with attic rooms. The median risalit of the facade has a tympanum decorated with a coat of arms. The upper rooms are covered with plastered mirror ceiling. The roof of the approximately 150m high Great Hall is the coffin-lid type. The extreme height of the upper triple windows, which lightens the hall, is an architectural feature, characteristic of Maria Theresa’s period.
At present, there are 23 rooms in the castle. The total size of the ground floor and the upper floor is approximatley 2,200 m² altogether. The size of the surrounding park is 16ha, of which 10ha are classified as meadow, 6ha as park.
The castle is privately owned and free. Exigent customers are welcome.
